“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
This week in Mark 2 we see Jesus in action healing people but most importantly, preaching the word.
Jesus truly was more interested in preaching and teaching and healing our sinful state. So many people came to “see the show” or have their needs met. Jesus has the incredible ability to see beyond what we want and see what we need, forgiveness and freedom from sin.
In Chapter 2 Jesus confronts some of his early critics by declaring in no uncertain terms that is is not the healthy that need a doctor but the sick. The trick is to know when you are sick, and I think like the pharisees we may also fail to realize that we ARE the sick. The pharisees left that encounter believing that they were healthy when the call to repentance and healing was as much for them as it was for everyone in that room and frankly anyone in the whole world for all time.
We need to take our pulse and if we are honest we will find that we are gravely in need of a savior.
We are reminded that salvation has come, Jesus is here to go beyond our wants and meet our greatest need… forgiveness of sins.
This week let’s prepare our hearts for worship and remember that freedom has come!
